Facebook Changes to Improve Security

How will the new Facebook rules affect your ability to import events?

Facebook is manually reviewing all apps that connect with the Facebook platform. Until MyCityScene is approved, we will no longer be able to import Facebook events.

Currently, Facebook is undergoing some major infrastructure changes with how they are allowing third-party developers to interact with their Graph API. I'm sure you've heard about the issues they are having because they allowed developers to collect personal user data, most notably Cambridge Analytica for the Trump campaign during the 2016 election. Because of those changes, they have shut down most aspects of their API to developers while they make the changes necessary to protect user data.

Because this change is on Facebook's end of things, if the import does not work, you may need to transfer the event content manually. This will eventually work again as our use of their API to gather event data does not collect any user data but we have to be patient while they fix their (fairly glaring) issue.

Your data is safe with us!

As Facebook makes changes to increase users' privacy, some web apps like MyCityScene are required to change how we interact with Facebook data. The good news is that we are considered a low risk platform by Facebook, since we do not gather ANY personal information. We simply import Facebook event data into our database. Please review our Privacy Policy.

Over the next few weeks, we will be working with Facebook to change our process for collecting data to adhere to new Facebook standards. Once the updates are complete, we will re-submit our platform processes to Facebook for approval. We are working to complete this process as quickly as possible.

Here is an article by Facebook on the subject: https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/04/restricting-data-access/

Many MyCityScene customers are not even aware of the Facebook changes because they have already indicated that they are attending the events that they want to import.

If you continue to have problems importing events from Facebook, please contact us with the Facebook event URL so we can test and provide a timely solution.

Thank you for your patience as we work with Facebook to make MyCityScene the best way to manage and share events.
